Angels & Demons: Sermon notes

This is a list of sermon notes from the sermon titled “Angels & Demons”:

1. There is only ONE GOD (capital “G”).

1. There only ever has been, and only ever will be ONE “capital G” Creator God.

1. He alone is worthy of worship, He alone is all-knowing, all-present, all-powerful, all-holy, all-good. His sovereignty is absolute. His glory/might is without measure.

2. He is the Only Being that exists in three-persons: Father, Son, and Spirit.

   1. “There is no one like Him.”

2. As CREATOR, God did not only create the natural world…but also a SPIRITUAL one.

3. And while the natural world is inhabited by natural beings (humans and animals) the spiritual world is inhabited by spiritual beings.

2. God made spiritual creatures in a heavenly realm.

1. Just as God created this natural world and filled it with natural creatures (animal, fish, birds, insects…people), He also created a spiritual world and filled it with spiritual creatures (Heavenly realm/Cosmic realm/Angelic or Spiritual realm). These two planes of existence are often referred together as “heaven and earth”.

1. There is an entire other realm/reality/dimension that exists, (another God-created ecosystem) that co-exists—in parallel—with our world.

2. The Bible tells us that while the spiritual realm is INVISIBLE to us (our natural eyes)…it is every bit as real.

3. There are different kinds of spiritual beings.

1. While we use the words “angels & demons”…the Bible describes many different kinds of spiritual creatures.

1. Angels/Demons - Archangels, Cherubim, Seraphim; Baals, Nephilim, Anakim, Rephaim” (just to name a few).

2. There is a whole cosmic zoology of Angelic beings!

4. Angels were designed to serve God’s purposes.

1. The main purpose of angels…

1. (Hebrews 1:14) “Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation?”

2. But there are many different kinds of TASKS that angelic creatures have been made to carry out.

   1. And just like people angels can DISOBEY GOD.

5. Angelic beings can sin.

1. Just like people…angelic beings were created good…but are able to sin.

1. (2 Peter 2:4-) For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell…

2. We can divide all angelic creatures into two main categories: Those who love and obey God, and those who don’t—Good spirits and Bad spirits.

3. But unlike people…there is no plan of redemption for angels.

6. There is no redemption for Angelic beings.

1. (Hebrews 2:16) “For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham.”

2. This should remind us of just how amazing and unique GRACE and MERCY are!

1. They are NOT obligatory! God does not OWE forgiveness to ANYONE! The fact that we get it is AMAZING! In all of creation…we are the only creatures that get access to God’s perfect forgiveness!

7. Angelic beings can interact with the natural world.

1. Some Angels were specifically DESIGNED to interact with us!

1. Because the whole reason that God created angels was to assist in carrying out His Redemptive Plan for humankind…they are given the ability to OBSERVE and ENGAGE WITH people.

1. Both good and bad spiritual beings can interact with our world (to varying degrees).

1. Angels deliver messages. They shut the mouth of lions. They can roll the stone away from a tomb. They can cause an earthquake and break the chains of disciples in prison. They can execute judgment on God’s enemies.

2. Demons can possess people. They can drive a man crazy and make him strong enough to break chains. They can possess animals. They can cause physical ailments. They can empower fortune-tellers. They can perform “false signs and wonders.”

1. But by far the most common way that Demonic powers can influence people…is by deception. They can “whisper into your ear” (Temptation).

2. In fact, the entire story of the REDEMPTION of FALLEN MAN…began with an angelic interaction. SATAN Influenced Eve.

1. (2 Corinthians 11) Devil masquerades as an angel of light.

2. (Galatians 1) Angel from heaven preaching another gospel…

3. Demonic forces have SIGNIFICANT INFLUENCE in our world TODAY.

8. The enemy has significant influence over our world today.

1. Evil forces are still at work today…working tirelessly/actively/strategically to corrupt and pervert every good thing God has made.

   1. (1 John 5:19) We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.

   2. (2 Corinthians 4:3–4) 3 And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. 4 In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

1. We should expect that those who have not put their faith in Jesus…are under the influence of the enemy.

2. This was true of us too…

2. (Ephesians 2:1–3) 1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.

1. Our battle is decisively/undebatably SPIRITUAL.
